Volkspark Friedrichshain

Volkspark Friedrichshain, laid out by Peter Joseph Lenné in 1848 as Berlin's first public city park, wears its history in its landscape: the park's two prominent hills are Trümmerberge — rubble mounds piled over two World War II flak bunkers that still lie buried beneath. Its centerpiece, the Märchenbrunnen fountain of 1913, is a neobaroque ensemble of Brothers Grimm fairy-tale figures dedicated to the memory of the March Revolution of 1848, which coincided with the park's founding year. During the GDR era, the park served as a central leisure destination for East Berliners, with maintained garden beds and an open-air stage. Today joggers, beach volleyball players, skaters, and biergarten visitors share the grounds — a lively neighborhood hub whose wartime past remains literally underground.
