Grünwald Castle

Gruenwald Castle stands dramatically on a high bank above the Isar valley south of Munich and is the only largely preserved medieval castle in the Munich region. First mentions date to the 13th century, while the present buildings come from the 15th-century late Gothic fortifications of Old Bavaria. The Wittelsbach dynasty used it as a hunting lodge and administrative seat in the Isar bend. Since 1979 the castle has housed a branch museum of the Bavarian Archaeological Collection with finds from Roman and Bajuwar settlement of the region. Visitors can roam the courtyard, climb the keep, and walk through the exhibits. From the rampart the view stretches across the Isar floodplain and the Munich foothills.
