Theatinerkirche

The Theatinerkirche — officially St. Kajetan — is Munich's pre-eminent Italian High Baroque church, its ochre-yellow twin-towered facade and commanding drum dome anchoring the Odeonsplatz since the late 17th century. Elector Ferdinand Maria commissioned it in 1663 as a votive church after the long-awaited birth of his heir, modelling it on Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome. Italian architect Agostino Barelli began construction, with Enrico Zuccalli later completing the interior; the ornate facade framing was added by François de Cuvilliés only in 1765–68, grafting a Rococo finish onto the Baroque shell. Inside, the barrel-vaulted nave is coated in dense white stucco relief that gives the church an almost theatrical luminosity. Beneath the nave, the Fürstengruft crypt holds the remains of several Wittelsbach rulers, including King Maximilian I Joseph.
