Pinakothek der Moderne

The Pinakothek der Moderne opened in 2002 as a purpose-built home for four independent collections under one roof: modern art, graphic arts, architecture, and design. Architect Stephan Braunfels centered the building on a 40-meter concrete rotunda flooded with natural light through a central oculus — a spatial move that doubles as both circulation hub and architectural statement, earning the building protected monument status. The Neue Sammlung design museum is the particular draw for many visitors, holding over 80,000 objects spanning Braun electronics, BMW concept cars, and everyday industrial artifacts, making it one of the most extensive design collections in Europe. The art galleries hold works by Picasso, Beuys, and Baselitz, while the TU Munich architecture museum preserves original drawings and models spanning centuries of built history. Opening hours run Tuesday through Sunday, with a late Thursday closing at 20:00 and a symbolic one-euro Sunday admission.
