Hill 400

The Burgberg near Bergstein in Kreis Düren is one of the prominent summits of the northern Eifel, reaching 400.8 metres above sea level. In December 1944 it was the site of one of the bloodiest engagements of the Hürtgen Forest campaign: US Army Rangers stormed the German-held summit in a multi-day assault that became known in American military history as the "Battle for Hill 400", with losses so heavy the Rangers called the hill "Death Hill". Today forested hiking trails lead to the top, where a memorial stone marks the 1944 fighting and clear days reward visitors with open views across the Eifel plateau.
