Ardross Castle

Barnes Castle — locally known as Barney Vaults — is an unfinished tower-house ruin set on a hillside of the Garleton Hills in East Lothian, roughly five kilometres north-east of Haddington near the village of Athelstaneford. No historical record explains why construction was abandoned, leaving only a shell of vaulted stonework that hints at what must have been a substantial building. The site is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the highest tier of heritage designation in Scotland. Accessible on foot across open hill pasture, the ruin sits in quiet countryside with wide views over the Lothian plain — a largely unvisited spot that rewards those willing to seek it out.
