Camera Obscura

Perched at the top of Castlehill on the Royal Mile, directly beside Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura occupies a Category A listed tower with one of the city's most coveted rooftop positions. It was founded in 1835 by entrepreneur Maria Theresa Short — a remarkable achievement for a woman operating in the male-dominated world of 19th-century scientific entertainment. The centrepiece remains the original camera obscura itself: a rotating rooftop mirror projects a live, real-time image of the surrounding Old Town onto a concave dish below, with no electricity or screens involved. The wider attraction, now branded World of Illusions, fills several floors with hands-on optical illusions, holograms, and mirror mazes that appeal strongly to families and curious visitors of all ages. The rooftop terrace offers an unobstructed 360-degree panorama over the Old Town roofscape toward the Firth of Forth, open daily until 22:00.
