Law Uk Folk Museum

The Law Uk Folk Museum is a former Hakka village house in Chai Wan on eastern Hong Kong Island, one of the last surviving examples of traditional Chinese vernacular architecture in the metropolis. The Luo (Law) family built the granite-and-rammed-earth house in the mid-18th century; the name Law Uk simply means House of the Law Family in Hakka. It predates British rule by about 90 years and survived as an island fragment when high-rises took over Chai Wan. Now a branch of the Hong Kong Museum of History, it displays original Hakka furniture, tools and farming implements. Admission is free and a visit takes barely twenty minutes, but it offers a rare glimpse of pre-industrial Hong Kong.
