Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village

Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village sits at the eastern end of Shau Kei Wan on Hong Kong Island, right on the narrow Lei Yue Mun channel facing Kowloon. The 22.97-hectare site served from 1885 as the British army's Lyemun Barracks, guarding the eastern harbour entrance; some of the old stone barrack blocks and gun positions survive and now form part of the adjacent Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence. After the army withdrew, the grounds were converted in 1988 into what was then Hong Kong's only government-run holiday village, with low-cost bungalows, sports halls, tennis courts and a climbing tower. Coastal paths lead walkers along the rocky shore with views of passing container ships and ferries. The mix of accessible greenery near the city and well-preserved military structures makes the park a draw for families and history buffs.
