Dammtor

Dammtor was one of the four main city gates of Hamburg in the baroque ramparts and stood until the mid-19th century where the railway station of the same name lies today. When the fortifications were dismantled the gate vanished; the name lives on in the Dammtor station and several street names such as Dammtorstrasse and Dammtordamm. Travellers arriving here today step out between the 1903 art nouveau station building, the CCH congress centre and Planten un Blomen park, which occupies the line of the former ramparts.
