Planten un Blomen

Planten un Blomen — Low German for 'plants and flowers' — covers 47 hectares along Hamburg's former city-wall ring, tracing its origins to a single plane tree planted by botanist Johann Georg Christian Lehmann on 6 November 1821. Its present-day layout was shaped by a series of horticultural exhibitions between 1953 and 1973, most notably producing one of Europe's largest Japanese gardens, designed by Hamburg-based Japanologist Karl Ploberger. The park's summer water-light concerts at the Großer Parksee — fountains, music, and colored lighting choreographed in sync — have been a Hamburg tradition since the 1950s. Today visitors find botanical themed gardens, open lawns, a Zen garden, children's play areas, and inline skating paths across a park that functions as the city center's main green lung on warm evenings.
