Memorial to Polish Soldiers and German Anti-Fascists

The Monument to the Polish Soldier and German Antifascist in Berlin's Volkspark Friedrichshain was inaugurated in 1972 as a joint symbol of the socialist bridge between East Germany and the People's Republic of Poland. It was originally called Monument to the Common Struggle of Polish Soldiers and German Antifascists. Designed by a German-Polish artists' collective led by Zofia Wolska and Tadeusz Lodziana, it combines a large central bronze sculpture with reliefs and panels recalling the Battle of Berlin, the Polish People's Army soldiers of the 1st Army and German resistance fighters. After reunification the monument was not torn down but listed as a heritage ensemble and restored in the 2010s. Walking through the park, visitors can experience it today as a rare witness of Polish-German Cold War memorial culture.
