The Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg is Germany's largest privately owned spoken word theatre. Founded in 1951 and named after the Austrian-German actor Ernst Deutsch, it is housed in a former cinema in the Uhlenhorst district at Friedrich-Schütter-Platz. The main stage holds over 600 spectators and draws around 200,000 visitors per season. Known for ambitious yet accessible theatre, it stages both renowned touring productions and in-house productions. The theatre is an important part of Hamburg's diverse cultural landscape outside of state-subsidised venues.
