Friedrichswerder Church

The Friedrichswerder Church on Werderscher Markt in Berlin-Mitte is a key work by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, built between 1824 and 1831 for the Crown Prince Frederick William. With its twin slender towers and uniform brick facade it is one of the earliest monumental brick buildings in Berlin since the Middle Ages and counts as the prelude to North German neo-Gothic. Heavily damaged in the Second World War, it was slowly rebuilt during the GDR years and has housed a sculpture museum of the Nationalgalerie since 1987, showing works by Schadow, Rauch, Tieck and Thorvaldsen. After years of closure for structural repairs, it reopened to the public in 2020.
