Gletscherschlucht Rosenlaui

The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge in the Bernese Oberland was carved over millennia by meltwater from the Rychenbach torrent, leaving limestone walls that rise up to 30 metres and smooth, cave-like passages polished by glacial water. Secured wooden walkways and iron ladders guide visitors through the narrowest sections, where the turquoise water rushes just below foot level. The gorge has drawn nature tourists since at least the early 19th century — the nearby Grandhotel Rosenlaui, one of Switzerland's oldest mountain hotels founded in 1771, once hosted Lord Byron. The walk doubles as a geology lesson in active glacial retreat: the visibly receding ice above the gorge makes climate change tangible in a way no textbook can replicate. The route is accessible enough for families yet remote enough to feel genuinely off the beaten path.
