Haarberg, at 239 metres the highest point in Aachen's Haaren district, is a popular local hill retreat just north of the city. Two landmarks define its summit: the Haarener Kreuz, a large metal cross now illuminated after dark, and the Friedenskapelle (Peace Chapel), built in 1969 to designs by local architect Paul Stollmann as a deliberate memorial against war. From 2004 to 2009 the surrounding landscape was carefully remodelled under an ecology project — traditional orchard meadows were planted, new biotope areas created, and footpaths extended. The summit offers an open panorama across Aachen and the western lowlands. The walk up is short and easy, and the spot draws a particular atmosphere at dusk, when the city lights spread out below the illuminated cross.
