Château de Hunebourg

The Château de Hunebourg is a medieval rock castle dating to 1125, perched on a 425-metre sandstone outcrop in the Northern Vosges near Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel in the Bas-Rhin département. As a classified historic monument, it ranks among the older surviving fortifications in Alsace, with masonry carved directly into the living sandstone. The Southern Zinsel valley provides the natural approach to the site, a forested trail through the Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord that opens onto wide views across the wooded ridgelines. The castle ruin makes a rewarding half-day destination from Strasbourg for hikers comfortable with uneven rock paths.
