Historic Renaissance palace with spectacular azulejo tile gardens in Lisbon – one of few palaces to survive the 1755 earthquake.

The Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira in Lisbon's São Domingos de Benfica neighbourhood is considered one of the finest examples of Portuguese Renaissance architecture. The palace and its gardens are among the rare survivors of the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Particularly striking are the garden terraces adorned with large azulejo tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history and mythology – a unique testament to the splendour of the Portuguese nobility.
