Jerusalem Church

The Jerusalemkirche on Lindenstrasse is one of Berlin's oldest churches, first mentioned in 1484 as a pilgrimage chapel outside the city gates. With the laying out of Baroque Friedrichstadt around 1700 it became the parish church of the Huguenot and Bohemian congregations. Karl Friedrich Schinkel and later Friedrich August Stueler reworked the building several times in the 19th century, and in 1878 it received a striking brick tower. Burnt out in the war, the church was rebuilt in 1961 in heavily reduced modern form: a low hall without tower, used today by the Berlin Stadtmitte church district for concerts and discussion evenings. Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum stands directly next door, creating a dense layer of Berlin religious history in one block.
