Heiligenstadt St. James's Church

Also known as: Heiligenstädter Kirche hl. Jakob mit Ruinenstätte, St. James's Church

Heiligenstaedter Kirche St. Jakob on the Heiligenstaedter Pfarrplatz in Vienna's 19th district Doebling is considered one of the oldest churches outside the inner city. The parish church, dedicated to Saint James, has a core dating from the 12th century and was rebuilt several times over the centuries, but always remained the centre of the former wine-growers' village. The surrounding square with its Heurigen taverns — including Mayer am Pfarrplatz, where Beethoven lodged in 1817 — is one of the most atmospheric corners on Vienna's northern fringe.
