Kaiser-Friedrich-Gedächtniskirche

The Kaiser Friedrich Memorial Church stands at the northern edge of Berlin's Tiergarten in the Hansaviertel and replaces a neo-Gothic predecessor built between 1892 and 1895 that was badly damaged in World War II. The current building by Ludwig Lemmer dates from 1957 and was created as part of the Interbau international architecture exhibition that rebuilt the destroyed quarter as a showcase of modernism. Clean lines, a freestanding bell tower and plain brick walls make it a textbook example of postwar Protestant church design. Inside, a wooden ceiling and colourful stained glass set a quiet mood. Visitors usually combine a visit with a walk through the listed Hansaviertel.
