Karaiskakis Stadium

The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus is the home ground of Olympiakos Piraeus and holds 33,296 spectators. It is named after the freedom fighter Georgios Karaiskakis, who was mortally wounded nearby in 1827 during the Greek War of Independence. The same site had earlier housed the velodrome of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, where the cycling races were run. The velodrome was later converted into a football stadium. For the 2004 Olympic Games the arena was completely rebuilt, with covered stands and direct tram access. On match days the harbor district fills with the red flags of Olympiakos supporters. The stadium also hosts the club museum, displaying trophies, jerseys and the history of Greece's most successful club.
