Kastella (Munychia)

Historic hill in Piraeus with an ancient fort and fine views over the harbour towards the Acropolis.

Kastella, known in antiquity as Munychia, is an 86-metre hill on the Piraeus peninsula southwest of Athens. In ancient times it served as a strategic fortress and the site of an Artemis Munychia temple. Today it is a pleasant residential neighbourhood with neoclassical houses and sea views. From the hilltop there are sweeping views over Piraeus harbour, the bay, and on clear days to the Acropolis. The surrounding streets come alive in the evening with a lively restaurant and café scene.
