Karlsplatz

Karlsplatz brings together two centuries of Viennese architectural history in a single open space: Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's Baroque Karlskirche, completed in 1739, and Otto Wagner's pair of Stadtbahn pavilions from 1899, considered among the purest expressions of Viennese Jugendstil. Wagner designed the pavilions as stations for Vienna's new urban railway, combining white-glazed marble, gilded ornament, and slender iron construction into a building type that treated public infrastructure as a Gesamtkunstwerk for the first time. Of more than 30 stations Wagner built on the same line, the Karlsplatz pavilions are widely regarded as his most refined. Today one pavilion houses a small museum on the Stadtbahn's history, while the square itself serves as a cultural crossroads between the Musikverein, the Konzerthaus, and the Technical University — in summer, café terraces animate the pond area in front of the church facade.
