Leceia – Chalcolithic Settlement

Chalcolithic fortified settlement near Lisbon, one of the most significant prehistoric archaeological sites on the Iberian Peninsula.

Leceia is a fortified Chalcolithic settlement west of Lisbon in the municipality of Oeiras, Portugal. First occupied at the end of the Neolithic period, the site was heavily settled and fortified during the Chalcolithic era, roughly 3000–2000 BCE. It was first excavated in 1878 by Carlos Ribeiro, whose resulting monograph is considered the first dedicated to a prehistoric Portuguese settlement. Listed as a monument of public interest since 1963, Leceia remains one of the most significant archaeological sites for understanding Copper Age culture on the Iberian Peninsula.
