Limmatquai

Limmatquai runs along the eastern bank of the Limmat through Zürich's old town, forming the most concentrated ensemble of Baroque guild houses in the city. The facades of the Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten (1708) and the Zunfthaus zur Saffran rise directly from the water's edge — guild halls that governed Zürich's economic and political life from the medieval period and still host ceremonial banquets today. The street sits within the orbit of Zwingli's Reformation, whose 16th-century reverberations shaped the institutions that once operated from these very buildings. Today, antiquarian bookshops, restaurants serving traditional Zürich cuisine, and pavement cafés occupy the ground floors between the guild facades. In the evening, the lit towers of the Grossmünster and Fraumünster frame the view from the quay, offering one of the city's most quietly rewarding urban panoramas.
