Northern Communal Cemetery in Warsaw

Warsaw's Northern Communal Cemetery in the Mlociny and Wolka Weglowa districts covers 143 hectares, making it one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. Laid out in 1973 to relieve the overcrowded Powazki, it feels more like a landscape park than a traditional city graveyard: long pine avenues, ponds and broad lawns between the rows of graves. It has its own bus route and named internal streets to help people find plots. Visitors come above all on All Saints' Day, when thousands of candles light the paths; on other days it is a surprisingly quiet place for a long walk on the city's edge.
