Overloon War Museum

The Oorlogsmuseum Overloon, just across the German-Dutch border, claims the title of Western Europe's largest war museum — and its origins are embedded in the very ground it stands on. In October 1944, one of the fiercest tank battles on Dutch soil was fought near Overloon, leveling the village and leaving behind a field strewn with military wreckage. That wreckage became the founding collection when the museum opened in 1946, making it also Europe's oldest WWII museum. Today the permanent exhibition spans dozens of original military vehicles, weapons, personal artifacts, propaganda material, and walk-through trench reconstructions. The immersive D-Day simulation draws particular praise from visitors, as do guided tours led by knowledgeable volunteer staff who tie individual objects to the broader arc of the Allied liberation campaign.
