Park Glienicke

Park Klein-Glienicke, known locally as Glienicker Park, is an English landscape garden at the southwesternmost tip of Berlin in the Wannsee district and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin". State chancellor Karl August von Hardenberg bought the estate in 1816; after his death Prince Carl of Prussia commissioned Karl Friedrich Schinkel to remodel the palace in classical style from 1824 and Peter Joseph Lenne to design the park. Prince Carl was a passionate traveller in Italy and the Mediterranean and brought back ancient spolia from Pompeii, Carthage and Constantinople to set into the grounds - the Stibadium bench, the lion basin, the corner tower. Schinkel's Casino and Grosse Neugierde pavilions face out over the Havel. The park is freely accessible today, picnickers gather here in summer, and from the Glienicke Bridge the view sweeps across to Potsdam.
