Kleiner Tiergarten

The Kleiner Tiergarten is a roughly nine-hectare park in Berlin-Moabit, framed by Turmstrasse, Stromstrasse and the Tiergarten town hall. As a green space it goes back to 1655, when the Great Elector laid out a hunting ground on the north bank of the Spree as an extension of what became the Grosser Tiergarten. In the 19th century Peter Joseph Lenne redesigned the surviving strip between the new tenement blocks as an ornamental promenade park, which is why the site is now protected as a historic garden monument. The park holds the Heinrich Zille memorial and a restored link to the Ottopark next door. Today it is the local hub of Moabit, with a playground, boules pitches, a cafe on Stromstrasse and lawns that fill up in summer.
