Church of the Redeemer

The Church of the Redeemer at Port Sacrow stands directly on the Havel shore south of Potsdam and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. Built in 1844 from sketches by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV and executed by Schinkel pupil Ludwig Persius, it fulfilled the king's wish for an Italian-style Rundbogen church with a freestanding campanile, inspired by Lombardian pieve churches. During the GDR years it lay directly inside the border strip between West Berlin and Brandenburg, inaccessible for decades and slowly decaying; only after 1989 was it painstakingly restored. Visitors reach it through Sacrow Palace Park or by boat — its position on a narrow peninsula facing Glienicke and Pfaueninsel makes it one of the most atmospheric spots in the Potsdam cultural landscape, especially at dusk.
