The New Bazaar

Pazari i Ri (New Bazaar) is the old market quarter of Tirana, a few hundred metres east of Skanderbeg Square. The present layout dates from a 2017 overhaul that paved the streets around the eighteenth-century Kokonozi Mosque, pulled the cars out and added a covered market hall, without erasing the area's role as the food market of Tirana. Within the block of low houses sit cafes, byrek bakeries, raki bars and stalls of fruit, cheese and meat. By day locals still come to do their shopping; by evening the bars and restaurants fill with a younger Tirana crowd and visiting travellers.
