Plötzensee

Lake Ploetzensee in Berlin-Wedding is a 7.85-hectare clear-water lake beside Volkspark Rehberge, with no visible inflow or outflow. It lends its name to a string of nearby places, the saddest of which is the Ploetzensee Memorial - in the adjacent Nazi-era prison, more than 2,800 political prisoners were executed between 1933 and 1945, including many members of the 20 July resistance group. The lake itself is now a popular lido with a sand beach on the southern shore; the rest of the shoreline has been a nature reserve for waterfowl and reed beds since 1979.
