MMK Museum of Modern Art

The MMK occupies a 1991 postmodern building by Austrian architect Hans Hollein on Frankfurt's Domhügel, its sharply triangular footprint — a direct response to the acute street intersection near the cathedral — earning it the nickname 'Tortenstück' (cake slice). The collection spans international contemporary art from the 1960s onward, with particular depth in Arte Povera, Minimal Art, and Pop Art, assembled since the museum's founding through acquisitions and major donations. Hollein's irregular geometry is never a neutral backdrop: steeply angled galleries and unexpected spatial transitions force curatorial decisions that make the architecture itself part of the viewing experience. Today the MMK operates across three Frankfurt venues — the main building near the Dom, MMK 2 in the Portikus hall, and MMK 3 in the Zollamt — allowing it to run concurrent exhibitions ranging from collection displays to large-scale solo shows.
