Ürgüp Kadıkalesi

Kadıkalesi — roughly translating as 'Judge's Castle' — is a rock-cut historical site carved into the soft tuff cliffs on the edge of Ürgüp in the Cappadocian highlands. The wider region was densely settled by Byzantine communities who hollowed the volcanic stone into dwellings, churches and fortified outposts over many centuries; this site is considered one of the lesser-known and, according to some visitors, insufficiently protected remnants of that era. Its appeal lies partly in its rawness: there is little interpretive infrastructure, which lends the place an atmospheric, slightly melancholic quality. A morning walk up to the rocks rewards with open views across the tuff formations of Cappadocia, while the surrounding lanes of Ürgüp offer pottery workshops, Turkish delight vendors, and small cafés within easy walking distance.
