Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera opened in 1869 as the Imperial Court Opera and anchors the grand Ringstrasse boulevard with its neo-Renaissance facade and ornate loggia. Its opening was shadowed by tragedy: co-architect Eduard van der Nüll died by suicide after Emperor Franz Joseph publicly dismissed the building as too low-lying — the Emperor reportedly became far more careful with public criticism afterward. An Allied bombing raid in March 1945 gutted the auditorium and stage entirely; the ten-year reconstruction concluded with a symbolic reopening in 1955 with Beethoven's Fidelio, marking Austria's return to cultural life. Today the house runs roughly 300 performances per season across opera and ballet, making it one of the most active stages in the world. Standing-room tickets from five euros make even last-minute attendance possible, while the annual February Opernball transforms the auditorium into Vienna's most formal ballroom.
