Kokořín
Prague
Kokořín Castle stands roughly 50 kilometres north of Prague in the protected Kokořínsko landscape, surrounded by eroded sandstone pillars and dense Bohemian forest. First documented in the 14th century, the castle fell into ruin over several centuries before nobleman Václav Špaček undertook a sweeping Neo-Gothic restoration beginning in 1894, deliberately evoking the aesthetic of Bohemian chivalric romance. Its slender keep is the landmark of the complex, offering views across the sandstone valley below. Today visitors tour the interior rooms with their historical collections and explore the surrounding rock formations on marked hiking trails through the Kokořínsko nature reserve.
