Kokořín

Kokořín Castle stands on a dramatic sandstone outcrop in the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area, about 40 kilometres north of Prague. The original fortress dates to the early 15th century but fell into ruin after the Thirty Years' War, leaving little more than a crumbling tower for centuries. From 1911 onward, nobleman Václav Špaček undertook an ambitious Neo-Gothic restoration, rebuilding the castle in the image of a medieval knight's stronghold — giving the Daubaer Schweiz region its most recognizable landmark. The restored keep commands sweeping views over a valley of sandstone pillars and mixed forest. Open seasonally from April through October (Tuesday to Sunday), the castle pairs naturally with hiking trails through the surrounding rock formations.
