Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade

The Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade stands on the banks of the Garonne in central Toulouse and is listed as a classified historic monument of France. Its name derives from the Latin 'deaurata' — 'the gilded one' — a reference to the golden mosaic vault of an early Christian temple that once occupied the site, establishing a tradition of worship here dating back to at least the 5th century. The present neoclassical structure was completed in 1883, replacing earlier buildings on the same sacred ground. At the heart of its devotion is the Black Madonna, a dark-toned Marian statue venerated since the Middle Ages and still drawing regional pilgrims, particularly at Candlemas. The interior is restrained and ceremonial; the church holds the rank of Basilica minor.
