Balvaird Castle
RuinsMiddle Ages
Affleck Castle is a medieval tower house with a distinctive L-shaped plan, situated about 1.6 km west of the village of Monikie in the Scottish council area of Angus. Tower houses of this type were the preferred fortified residence of Scotland's lesser nobility in the 15th and early 16th centuries — compact, vertically arranged, and designed to minimize exposure to attack. Affleck is considered one of the better-preserved examples of this building type in eastern Scotland and is listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument by Historic Scotland. The site sits within a quiet agricultural landscape with no visitor infrastructure, lending it an atmosphere of genuine, undisturbed remoteness.
