Brechin Cathedral

Brechin Cathedral — formally the Brechin Parish Church — is a medieval Gothic church in the small Scottish town of Brechin, Angus, listed at the highest category A of Scotland's heritage register since 1971. Its most remarkable feature is an 11th-century Irish-style round tower, one of only two such towers surviving on the Scottish mainland; this type of slender free-standing tower is otherwise almost exclusively found in Ireland, pointing to deep early-medieval monastic connections across the Irish Sea. The Gothic nave dates to the early 14th century, built over earlier structures on the same site. The surrounding churchyard, partly classified as a Category B listed structure, holds gravestones spanning several centuries. The cathedral remains an active Church of Scotland congregation and is open to visitors.
