Independence Square

Independence Square is the civic heart of Gjumri, Armenia's second-largest city, measuring 125 × 125 meters and framed by five major avenues including the Sayat Nova and Tigranes the Great boulevards. It was laid out in the 1940s as part of Soviet postwar urban planning, a period when Armenian city centers were restructured along Stalinist principles of axial symmetry and monumental scale. The square ranks as the second-largest public space in Gjumri after Vardanants Park. Today it functions as a calm local gathering point rather than a tourist destination — a slice of mid-century Soviet urban planning still legible in the street grid around it.
