Ankogel

The Ankogel is a 3,252-metre summit on the border between Carinthia and Salzburg that lends its name to the Ankogelgruppe within the High Tauern range — despite not being the group's highest peak. On the night of 6–7 January 1932, a dramatic rockfall sheared off the original summit, reducing its height by roughly eleven metres in a single event that remains one of the more unusual episodes in Austrian alpine history. The mountain is accessible via the Gastein cable-car network and higher alpine trails, rewarding fit hikers with sweeping views across the central Alps. The terrain above the treeline requires sure-footedness and proper mountain equipment.
