Äußerer Bärenbartkogel

The Äußerer Bärenbartkogel is a 3,473-metre summit at the northern end of the Planeiler Berge within the southern Ötztal Alps in South Tyrol, Italy. Its north face is blanketed in firn and ice almost to the very top, while the south flank drops steeply and ice-free into the upper Matsch Valley. Despite the neighbouring Weißkugel having been climbed as early as 1845, the Äußerer Bärenbartkogel saw its first recorded ascent only in September 1909, by Fridolin Hohenleitner and Josef Plattner. Today it is a demanding high-alpine route requiring glacier travel experience and full mountaineering equipment. The summit rewards with an expansive view across the Ötztal and Ortler Alps.
