Aneto

Pico d'Aneto, at 3404 metres, is the highest summit in the Pyrenees and the tallest peak in the Aragonese region of Spain. It sits within the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, established in 1994 to protect the glaciated high terrain of the Maladeta massif. The first recorded ascent was made in 1842 by Russian officer Wilhelm von Bremer alongside Pyrenean pioneer Platon de Tchihatcheff. The standard route ascends from the Renclusa mountain hut across the Aneto Glacier — one of the last surviving glaciers in the Pyrenees, now dramatically reduced by climate change. The final approach crosses a narrow ridge called the Paso de Mahoma, requiring sure footing and basic alpine experience; on a clear day the summit offers views stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean.
