South Tagus rail terminus accessible only by ferry from Lisbon – gateway to the Alentejo line.

Barreiro station sits on the south bank of the Tagus, directly across from Lisbon, and has always been accessible only by ferry – a 15-minute crossing from the Terreiro do Paço terminal that is a small journey in itself. Historically the station was the starting point of the Linha do Alentejo, the route into Portugal's vast, sparsely populated southern interior. Today the Linha do Sado continues to operate an hourly service, running through Setúbal toward the Atlantic coast. The station itself is a quiet, workaday building, but its position at the water's edge and its connection to the ferry give it a particular character.
