Castello di Montecuccolo

The Castello di Montecuccolo is an 11th-century hilltop fortress perched at 848 metres in the Apennine foothills of Emilia-Romagna, about 4 kilometres southwest of Pavullo nel Frignano. Built around 1050, it served as a strategic strongpoint controlling mountain passes through the Frignano range and formed the nucleus of a medieval hilltop settlement whose traces still surround the keep. The castle bears the name of the Montecuccoli family, which produced the celebrated 17th-century military commander Raimondo Montecuccoli — giving this remote stone structure an unexpectedly broad historical reach. Designated an Italian national monument, it sits amid quiet woodland with open views across the Apennine ridgelines, making it a rewarding destination for hikers exploring the surrounding uplands.
