Berlin-Lichtenberg

Berlin-Lichtenberg station straddles the boundary between the Lichtenberg and Rummelsburg districts, its sprawling track infrastructure a lingering trace of a grander past. From the 1980s onward it served as East Berlin's primary long-distance terminus, routing the bulk of DDR intercity services as well as international trains heading east into the Soviet Bloc — a role that stations like Friedrichstraße, more visible to Western visitors, never actually held. Reunification gradually stripped it of that function as intercity traffic shifted first to Ostbahnhof and eventually to the new Hauptbahnhof. Today it handles regional and S-Bahn services and is fully wheelchair accessible, operated by DB InfraGO AG.
