Château de Lichtenberg

Château de Lichtenberg, first documented in 1206, stands as a sprawling hilltop ruin above the village of Lichtenberg in the northern Alsace region of Bas-Rhin. It served as the original seat of the Lordship of Lichtenberg, commanding the Vosges passes between the Rhine plain and the western Palatinate for centuries. Remarkably, the castle remained an active fortification as late as the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, giving it one of the longest continuous military careers of any medieval stronghold in the region. Classified as a French historic monument, the site is open to visitors today: the surviving keep offers panoramic views across forested Vosges ridgelines, while the ruined curtain walls and casemate remnants still convey the original scale of the fortifications.
