Boyle Abbey

Boyle Abbey is one of Ireland's best-preserved Cistercian ruins, set beside the River Boyle in County Roscommon just off the N4 road between Dublin and Sligo. Founded in 1161 as a daughter house of Mellifont — Ireland's first Cistercian abbey — the complex reveals a fascinating stylistic transition mid-construction: the nave's capitals shift visibly from Romanesque rounded forms to early Gothic pointed arches, reflecting the decades it took to complete. Seized during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under English rule in the 16th century, the building later served as a garrison and then as a residence for the King family before falling into slow decline. Now a protected National Monument, the abbey is open to visitors who can walk freely through the nave, cloister, and chapter house, their stone vaults remarkably intact for a structure left largely untended for centuries.
